SECOND WORLD WAR: German brutality in Russia: Executions of peasants

----------------------------------------
The two pictures below were found in the pocket of a German soldier who died in the winter of 1941 during the Battle of Moscow. It shows three captured Russian soldiers made to dig their own graves.....

The  Russian soldiers dig their graves as the Germans look on impassively.....

The Russians moments before the shots rang out, stand in their graves....

These are rare images of the German brutality in Russia. Shown above are innocent Russian farmers, shot without mercy.

More executions of Russian peasants. A German soldier took this picture proudly. The farmers were lined up near the pit and shot so they fell directly into it.

A gruesome photo of the Gestapo officers shooting a Russian peasant through the back of his head.

Einsatzgruppen, the Nazi killing squads, doing their work in Russia

This family of ordinary Ukrainians was killing in Slorow. July 15, 1941 They were Jewish. The lone survivor, a boy, stands shivering. Moments later he too was shot.

Partisans in Russia were dealt ruthlesslyby the Germans in Russia. They were either shot or hanged.

Ukrainian Jews who were forced to undress before being massacred by Einsatzgruppe detachment. This photo, originally in color, was part of a series taken by a German military photographer. Later, copies of this collection were used as evidence in war crimes trials. Lubny, Soviet Union, October 16, 1941.

I think it's important to remember that the German army at this time was one of the most disciplined fighting forces in the world. It's the reason Hitler made them swear an oath on his rise to Fuhrer; he knew they wouldn't break it.

That unflinching devotion to service and country would be their undoing, eventually - there were many suicides in combat. German soldiers who just couldn't deal with the brutality anymore - and the crime. Even leadership attempted to murder Hitler several times.

The Nazis were Germans, but the Germans weren't Nazis. Not all German soldiers were so criminally cruel. Most criminal cruelty was perpetrated not by the German Army, but by the Nazis and their divisions (SS, Gestapo, etc)

the above comment is interesting. Racism and anti semitism was rampant in germany even before hitler was born (check out bismarks anti jewish legislation)
the regular german army did just as much wrong as the SS, SD, SA, Gestapo etc. take a closer look at the picture of the two "gestapo officers shooting the man in the back of the head"
Incorectly labelled as the the two officers are not gestapo, infact their uniforms are regular army uniforms and not paramilitary party organizations. the 'bevo' on the cap instead of the 'deaths head' is a dead give away.

Russian Jews stole German uniforms off the dead bodies of soldiers killed in Russia, then put these outfits on and staged these photos. The purpose: to hide the truth of who REALLY was murdering the farmers, and to brainwash the Russian masses into helping them slaughter Germany and all Germans. The Russian Jew always hated the peasants, who were as "anti-semitic" as the Germans. Since the Russian jews controlled all Soviet Government after they murdered the Czar, they chose to liquidate the farmers and use the profits from their crops for their war against the German race. The Germans had no time, or inclination to murder innocent nobodies in Russia, they were busy fighting Russian armies. These photos are all FAKES.

The brutality of the Germans was second to none during the war. Their crimes against the Soviet peasants, Jews, Polish and Czech were unmatched in human history. To say that it was the work of just a few SS men is disingenuous. They perpetrated 5 wars since 1850 and their "racist" leanings was merely catalyzed by Hitler.
One theory on why the Germans with their warring mindset suddenly went quiet after WWII postulates that nearly all of the men with a violent genome were obliterated during the war. Overall, Germany paid a much lesser price for the Armageddon they created.
It is unthinkable to imagine what the plight of the occupied peoples might have been had Hitler won the war.

the nazis raped women but not so many like the soviets did in berlin and the rest of the world,it's in their blood and culture, they destoyed the lives of innocent people, all slavs are the same.the rape of women by the red army is countless and the victims have to carry the trauma for the rest of their lives.russians are worthess and they are an evil disease to mankind who know only to destroy and prey on the weak.if i have it my way, they would be wiped off from the face of this earth and each and every soviet woman be raped brutally over and over again

It's funny that the two officers that are shooting the peasants have in their hands MAKAROV RUSSIAN pistols and not the traditional German Mauser. And it's funny that the people where labeled as peasants while, they could have been partisan fighters for RUSSIA, that where sentenced to death after they shoot German soldiers. One of my uncles was shoot by the Communists for being a partisan, trust me you have not seen it all think about it 45 years of communism over eastern Europe.

How many people know that there were Germans living in Russia and the Ukraine that were massacred by the Reds during the Revolution? Countless Russians fled the Soviet Union to take their chances with the Nazis.

The nazis killed 30 million russians, they had orders that russian were "subhuman" and had to be wiped off the face of the earth. The russian soldiers had their homes destroyed and their wives, parents, and children killed by the germans. The soldiers had nothing else to loose and they looked for revenge in raping Nazi's wives and daughters. If the nazis didn't start the war it wouldn't happen.

Russian government massacred millions of it's own russian anti-government people. The decision makers in the government were the problem, who wanted to preserve their power, not all of russian people.

The Germany army carried out doctrine which was to round up and kill partisans. Partisans murdered German soldiers. If they were just passing out propaganda, the response would not be harsh. Before one accuses Germans of being antisemitic, let us remember that even Churchill and Roosevelt turned away boatloads of Jewish refugees! The world has always been antisemitic, not just Germany. Russia murdered more than Hitler could dream of accomplishing. Russian soldiers, (NOT JEWS) were notorious for staging photos, which they did when mass murders took place. This is common knowledge. J Stewart, I am sorry to inform you they were second...to Soviet Russia! Stalin "misplaced" 8 MILLION PEOPLE during the 1921 World census...oops!. Not to mention the 6 million Ukranian farmers who were starved to death by the soviets, in 1939. Why do you think the Ukranians were so eager to join the Germans? Why do you think they did all the dirty work in the concentration camps? Vengeance against Jews, Gypsys, or anyone else who supported the soviets. WW2 is a lot deeper than some of you with shallow minds. Read the books written by the losers. What have they got to lose? The winners will tell bigger better stories. Again, J Stewart, it seems you are having a hard time to accept the fact that the German Army was called "Liberators" by ukranians and even RUSSIANS! YES RUSSIANS! Those photos are not just random russian peasants killed. They harbored fugitives (Partisans), did not follow livestock protocol (All livestock belonged to the Wehrmacht), were jewish or said something discouraging to the Germans. Not just cause they were "Russian". MANY Russians fought for Germany, see "POA" on google. Education guys is important! Not media fabrication!

more than half of the above displayed pictures are clear falsifications or forgeries.
They where fabricated by an US-American unit in Munich, Germany after the war.

All armys carried out brutality during WW2. To assume any side was lily white is extreme in its naievity. The Russians in Particular were very brutal in there revenge taken in Germany. As far as Racisim goes the whole of Europe was deeply anti semitic from the middle ages right through. It is however very convenient for the entirety of Europe to sit back now and say it was only Germany like a bunch of bullys in a playground blaming the 1 kid who threw the biggest blow.

Even if many Russians fought on the side of the Wehrmacht, there were also many NON-Russians from Soviet Union, including Tatars and Caucausians (Chechenians, Georgians, etc.).It´s true that many photos of "Nazi crimes" are manipulated, but each side like to lie and to manipulate.

Nazis were cruel beyond anything can really describe. But the Red army also treated both the Russians and the Germans with brutality. The amount of rapes done by the Red Army is mind-blogging. It is true that the Russians were treated extremely cruelly. But still it doesn't justify raping German women most of whom had nothing to do with all the Nazi brutality.

How could you post the comment dated April 20, 2011 7:39 AM?? The moron who wrote it didn't even have courage enough to write his name. It's against people like these that our grandparents fought the war. And yet my grandfather, a decorated soldier in one of the elite divisions, told me these words once: " I've never hated the Germans. I was fighting the nazis. I've never killed anyone outside of the battle, I've never shot the POWs. They were all people, young people like me. And that war was between the people of our generation. You young people should not even think of it when you meet, you should live in peace with each other, you should be friends. That's what we fought for." Those are the words of the kindest person I know, my granfather, the war veteran who didn't let the war brutalise him. And now I came across this comment filled with hatred from a person who is undoubtedly too young to know anything about that war. He didn't fight, he didn't suffer, he wasn't there, the majority of us weren't, so why is the hate there? Why do we have to keep fighting? To the person who posted that ugly comment: you don't know Russia, you don't know Russian people, don't judge, because the way you judge - that's how you will be judged too.
And the comment on February 18, 2011 5:37 PM is just ridiculous, surely someone cannot really think that. It says here that the comments must be approved by the blog author - well, I suggest the author does a better job to prevent the hatred from spreading.

Why do some of you try and pin it on the Allies that they were just as cruel as the Germans, what, you think being in a trench watching every friend you know, get killed in a matter of seconds, all the bodies of dead lying everywhere, Remember in War, people change to do cruel things because what they have seen. A lot of Soldiers thought it would be great fun to join the army, kill a few Germanys would be awesome. That’s what all the people recruiting thought. Then you look at the soldiers that have been in trenches or warfare for months, they are sick of the killing. Nothing but death. Some go killing crazy and take no prisons. And execute any if they have some.

Some say Russia or America did brutal tortures to German prisoners after the war. Yes we might all say that’s not right. But, we are not the ones that have fighting, watching people die constantly. Some Russians may have been prisoners in camps and watch the brutal death of their friends being tortured and if they escape. They are memories they can never forget. These are things that will make them hate the Nazis so badly. If you look at the Japanese methods, their medieval and uncivil and brutal. By soldiers experiencing this, this can change the way of how they look at the war, when Japanese were captured, and put in prison camps, they worried about being executed. But we treated them nicely, and why the Japanese worried so much because if they capture someone they execute them unlike us. And by us (Allies) finding this out, do you really think that we are going to go on being nice to them in a camp( like feed them good food and a decent bed to sleep in and they are aloud to walk about), They gave out soldiers barley any food to live. This is why, getting to the end of the war, mostly all countries used brutal methods in the end.
I'll get to my point. No one can ever judge a soldier or a nation for his actions unless you have experienced that pain, suffering and destruction in their life.

Hitler would have wiped the soviet union off the face of the earth. Literally, this was hell on earth. Two ideaologies killing each other on such a massive scale of bloodshed. Hard to believe this happened 70 years ago. Hitler was satan in desguised who brainwashed his people to do his killing

What it boils down to is that neither side is justified, it's within the individual to decide their own actions. You can take a look at fascism and communism. Two totally different ideas, but that's the thing they're ideas. Stalin was just as much a ruthless dictator.. And I condone neither side

Maybe Hitler and his accessories had parents who were brother and sister and grandparents who were primates. All Nazis seem to resemble chimpanzees or gorillas. No rational human being would committ such totally inexcusable atrocities. They're certainly demon possessed. That's what SS stands for - Servants of Satan. Scumbag Slime. Senseless and Stupid. People who aren't demon possessed know that racism is wrong. Nazis seem to think they can blame others for their mistakes. They want something for nothing and want to exploit others. They want things that they never worked for. What a shame!

Great site with an even greater collection of images however..though I'm not disputing any of the images above you seem to keep falling into the trap of making an image into what the caption reads..e.g.(I paraphrase), primary school teacher hanged by the Germans..etc. This may well be true but without a reference of some kind the pictures caption should read..Young woman hanged from a headless statue of Lenin whilst a young boy looks on and a German soldier strolls by. It could very well be exactly as you describe it but where does the "primary school teacher" description come from? A good example of this are the infamous pictures of the mountains of bodies described as being gassed victims of Belsen who are actually typhus victims from Auschwitz. As I say, great site (regardless of some of the rabid and ridiculously ill informed comments) but you could do with backing up some of the descriptions if you're going to be so specific. I also have to add that without doubt the Germans committed some pretty horrendous brutalities in Russia but it always seems a bit odd to me that so many of them had cameras and darkroom facilities with them compared to the other theaters of war. If you haven't already you could add a page for hoaxed photos from all sides as one or two of the ones here would get you started. The "primary school teacher" doesn't quite sit right in the picture for me but I accept that I could be wrong.

The bottom line , if Russia didn't chew up all the elite German divisions WW2 would have had a different ending

Points To Ponder

WHY WAS THE FIGHTING ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT SO FIERCE DURING WW2?

It is difficult to distinguish between the quality of both the German and Russian soldiers. Both were motivated by their love for their motherland. But there were others factors that drove the two sides to such desperate fighting.

One, both sides knew that this was a no-holds bar war. Not fighting was thus not an option.

Second, both Hitler and Stalin had squads that killed any deserter. Turning away from fighting was just not possible.

Thus was seen some of the most bitter, brutal and desperate fighting on the WW2 eastern (Russian) Front.

The reason the German soldier did not rape and loot as the other armies did. Including the US. (I was there) was the disciplin. Half the troops or at least a great number of troops on my train to the front were AWOL's or deserters. That would not have happened in the German military. You left your post you were shot. Simple as that. Germans knew that so deserting was not an option. But the ordinary soldier knew that also applied to the officers. You did your duty or else.Remember Rommel? Hitler didn't care. Just follow orders. The respect for the officer by the ordinary soldier was good. I didn't have much respect for our officers. For months after the war we were still drinking instant coffee and instant milk. The general was living it up in London I suppose because I never saw him afterwards even though I was in 3rd DIVARTY Have a nice day

"The photos are nice, but I hate the way the nazis are portrayed. They are portrayed as always evil. Think about it. What do you think would happen when a country loses WWI? When they enter a depression and are stolen from by gypsies and jews?! Also, the Russians were just as brutal if not worse. They ran the gulags! They murdered men, women, and children who opposed communism. Stalin's regime killed 65MILLION people in it's lifetime. Hitler killed 21MILLION. Take your pick, you politically correct WUSS!"

Anonymous on Nazi Germany: A Pictorial History

"ever heard of the saying two wrongs don't make a right. yes they lost ww1, but they started it so they got their just deserts. and hitler was pure evil, theres no doubt he was a great leader and orator that took advantage of a country in despair. he stood by people that were simular to him and used them to 'persuade' others in high places to flock to his banner. once in power it was easy to unite a nation with his speaches that germeny could rule the world at ANY cost, the hatetred between germany and russia was legendry with both country's sinking to new levels of barbarism.as for russia killing millions of their own under stalin, yes, that was an atocity in itself but it was an internal matter in russia. nothing to do with the west. germany treated the russians as less than human in fact, less than the jews and the feelings were neutral. the battle of stalingrad were tesamony to that. so picking someone to like because they killed 21m instead of 65m is just sick and shows what sort of person you really are. i will say though that although these pictures are interesting, dont belive everything that they show. the picture at the top seems to show two peasants being shot, both are women so we asume that they are inocents. not so, women fought along side their men with amazing efect. rusian women were excellent marksmen and made effective snipers and machine gunners. not behind them a machingun nest. its more likely that the machingun nest was overun and they are being shot for shooting german soldiers. that being said, it saddens me to say that many of the pictures do depict atrocities that the devil himself would be ashamed of.having never been in a war, i can't imagine what humans would go through under such horrific conditions. knowing death was just around the corner probly turned the most mild mannered men and women into monsters. im not going to justify there actions or condone them but to understand what they went through. i hope for all our sakes we never have to go through anything like it again. but i think we will."

"Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Great Comments From You

Umm... you just used the phrase "according to Wikipedia". You do understand that there is a reason colleges don't allow students to use information from Wikipedia, don't you? People are free to edit the information as they see fit, thus leading to glaring inaccuracies and misinformation. And, of course, if I were to say that the 6 million number was Jewish/Allied propaganda you would probably scream, rant, and rave about how that was an accurate number. Even though the number of Jews in the area that Germany took over there were only around 6 million Jews to start with. Over a million of them officially migrated to Russia before the war, and another million to the USA and other countries. Which would have given them only 4 million to hunt down. Can you honestly tell me that once the war actually started that none of those remaining 4 million didn't run and hide until the war was over? The 6 million number came from a Reader's Digest article from the late thirties, go look it up. There may have been 6 million deaths in the camps total, but they weren't all Jewish. As a matter of fact Jews generally only comprised 5-10% of the camp populations during the war. The point is, history is written by the victors, and Germany didn't win. Thus, they were immediately demonized to make the allied atrocities fade into the back ground. Like the blockade that the allies put on Greece, starving over a million Greeks to death. I'm not defending the Nazi's. I just wish the world would wake up and realize that both sides were horrible, both sides published ridiculous propaganda, and both committed atrocities. The Allies' atrocities were stricken from the records or downsized, while the Nazi atrocities were blown completely out of proportion. It's just human nature, deal with it.
